Java Runtime Jre For Mac

I am looking for the path the the JRE file on Mac OS X 10.6.8. Or is there no such file? Is JRE just slang for an idea or concept? Java Runtime Environment is a real thing. May be just try to install the last Java runtime environment JRE because Apple supplies their own version of Java. Use the Software Update feature (available on the Apple menu / Software Update.) to check that you have the most up-to-date version of Java for your Mac. For mac it's actually the version 6 (if i remember). Java is a runtime environment maintained by Oracle that you must install on your Mac to be able to run applications written using the Java programming language. Moreover, Java allows developers to make apps available on multiple operating systems at the same time because Java-based utilities will run on any platform that can integrate the runtime environment. One of the functions of Java Preferences was to set the current version of the JRE. Under Oracle Java, only a single version of the JRE can be installed at a time. See Installing the JRE on macOS. To access the Java Control Panel, in the System Preferences panel, click the Java icon.

Some users may need internet artifacts like the Java browser plugin to run legacy apps that require it. The options to run Java apps are few and far between these days. Yet it is possible to use Microsoft’s new Edge web browser — the Chromium-based version of Edge — to run Java apps. Assuming you have Java installed on your computer, the only requirement is an intermediary in the form of an extension.

How Do I Install Java For My Mac?

What makes Java support possible in the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is Edge’s support of Chrome extensions. If you are still running the old version of Edge, it handles the need for running Java apps in a completely different way. Although Microsoft has its own extensions library, you won’t find what you are looking for there. Edge users with Java needs must visit the Chrome Web Store instead to install the one discussed here.

Java in the new Microsoft Edge using IE Tab

One method to use Java in the new Microsoft Edge is to install the IE Tab extension. The “IE” in IE Tab is an abbreviation for Internet Explorer. Available for Edge from the Chrome Web Store, IE Tab emulates Internet Explorer within an Edge browser window. The extension uses the Internet Explorer rendering engine to display Java content (as well as ActiveX and Silverlight content). It is easy to install, and even easier to use. It is important to note that IE Tab works on Windows machines only.

Visit the IE Tab page in the Chrome Web Store. Click the blue Add To Chrome button. A dialog will display asking you if you want to Add IE Tab, accompanied by a list of functions it can perform. Click the Add extension button.

Once installed, the IE Tab icon in Microsoft Edge displays next to Edge’s address bar. Click the icon to open an IE Tab. In the IE Tab, input the web address of a page that contains Java content. In the example below, our Java version verification was successful. The page uses a Java detection applet, with the latest version of Microsoft Edge using an IE Tab.

Try that same verification process in a regular Edge tab, and a notification that, “We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser,” displays instead.

Java Web Start, No Browser Required

If you have the Java plugin on your Windows machine, then you have Java Web Start (JWS). The question is does the Java application you want to run use JWS technology? JWS launches automatically if you download a Java app that uses it (usually in the form of a .jnlp file). Check the Java app developer’s website to see if they have a JWS download link for their app. If they do, download it and save a shortcut on your desktop when prompted by JWS. Double-click the shortcut to run the app.

Also included with JWS is a Java Cache Viewer. Use Cache Viewer to launch applications you have already downloaded. Here’s how:

1. Launch the Java Control Panel (Control Panel > Programs > Java icon). Double-click the Java icon.

2. Under the General tab, click the View button in the Temporary Internet Files section to launch the Java Cache Viewer in a separate window.

3. Double-click an application listed in the Java Cache Viewer to launch it without needing a web browser.

If the Java app you want to use is not listed or does not launch when double-clicked, contact the app’s developer.

This quick guide explains how you can fix the LibreOffice requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) error.

LibreOffice – the free office suite requires Java runtime environment for some of its own functionalities. For example, some of the plugins, extensions, Python macros require Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to work.

Lack of JRE, would cause the below error in LibreOffice:

LibreOffice requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRE (and libreoffice-java-common) and restart LibreOffice.

This happens when JRE is not installed in your OS – be it either Windows or Linux. Before you go ahead and try to fix via installing JRE, first you have to check whether Java Runtime Environment is installed in your system or not.

How to check if LibreOffice detected Java Runtime Environment

Before you install Java Runtime Environment to fix the issue, follow the below steps to check whether Java is installed and LibreOffice is able to detect it.

  • Open LibreOffice (calc, Impress, etc).
  • Go to from Menu : Tools -> Options -> Advanced under LibreOffice.
  • Under Java Options window, if Java is installed you would see it listed. If not, there will not be any entries.

How to Fix JRE Error – LibreOffice

Fixing JRE error in LibreOffice is different in Windows and Linux systems. Follow the steps below accordingly.

Windows

  • Download Oracle Java Runtime Environment from below the official link and install it in Windows. This link will take you to manual installation for Windows 10 with an offline installer.
  • Select “Windows Offline (64-bit)”.
  • After downloading, click on jre-***.-windows-x64.exe to install. It should open up a window like below. Do not change the destination folder. Click Install.
  • After successful installation, you should see below below message.
  • Now, its time to verify Java installation in Windows.
  • By default Java setup installs it in C:Program FilesJavajre1.8.0_231
  • Close all the LibreOffice instances.
  • Restart LibreOffice and perform the task which gave you the error. You should not be receiving the error anymore.
  • Verify from Tools -> Options -> Advanced that LibreOffice detected the Java runtime correctly.

Linux, Ubuntu, RHEL, Fedora

Ubuntu, Linux Mint and other Ubuntu based systems

  • If you are running Ubuntu, open terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and run below commands:
Java Runtime Jre For Mac

Fedora

For Fedora, run below commands

  • Once the installation is finished, close all instances of LibreOffice.
  • Restart LibreOffice and perform the task which you were doing causing the error.
  • You should not be receiving any more errors.

For other Linux distributions, download the related package (RPM, etc) from the above official Oracle download page.

If you have successfully installed the Java Runtime Environment, then go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced again and you can see Java is listed (see below). Select the JRE and press OK.

Troubleshooting

  • If you are unable to find Java Runtime Environment after installing JRE, click on the Add button and browse-select the directory where Java is installed.
  • For Windows 10, Java is installed typically in C:Program FilesJavajdk-***. OR C:Program Files (x86)Javajre**** Select the jdk/jre folder and click Ok.
  • After successful installation, always close all LibreOffice instances and check whether Java is detected.
  • If that still doesnt work, then try restarting your system.
